Michael Phelps as well as plenty of other swimmers plus a lot of the gymnasts all had these welts, predominantly on their shoulders and upper backs. These bruises occur as a result of cupping therapy.
Cupping therapy is an ancient Chinese form of medicine that was originally used to create an energy flow to a particular area of the body. These days cupping is used in a similar way but to increase blood flow to certain areas such as the all important shoulders for swimmers and gymnasts. There are two different types of cupping therapy, wet and dry cupping. Wet cupping is a medicinal type of cupping.

Most people believe deep tissue massage must hurt to work. But the saying, “No pain, no gain,” doesn’t always apply.
In fact, many people fall into a deeper state of relaxation when they receive a deep tissue massage, which may be the reason they get the relaxation therapy.
So, what is a deep tissue massage? It’s the manipulation of the deeper layers of muscle and soft tissues in the body. The massage therapist uses warm oils and direct pressure to relax the top layer of muscle in order to reach deeper layers of the muscle tissue.
Many people get a deep tissue massage to help relieve chronic aches and pain. Some feel the benefits of a deep tissue massage in minimizing lower back pain, releasing tension in a stiff neck, sore shoulders, upper back, or loosening tight muscles in their arms and legs.
The word myofascial comes from the Latin words ‘myo’ meaning muscle and ‘fascia’ meaning band.
Fascia is a connective tissue, also sometimes known as fibrous bands, which surrounds all muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones and organs within the body. The fascia consists of a network of hollow tubules made up of collagen and elastin.
Fascia itself is very strong, flexible and dynamic and so responds well to stretching. The fascia loses its elasticity through physical and emotional trauma and poor posture. This results in the fascia hardening and the general flexibility of both the fascia and the muscle it surrounds, decreases.
